As I look at the wood kids picnic tables we have in the back yard, some excellent childhood memories start to rise. Memories on the subject of a kids picnic table? Believe me, I'm serious!

When we were real little, the wood kids picnic table was a wonderfull location to eat our peanut and butter sandwiches, watermelon, corn on the cob and all kinds of messy summer time foods that we all cherished. The wood kids picnic table was for much more than eating on!

The table was also a jumping off point as we loved to put on capes and pretend we were superheroes. Back then Batman and Superman used to be all the rage so we protected the area from the likes of the Joker, the Riddler, Lex Luthor, Braniac and the other supervillians who may dare enter the area we so devotedly protected.

When we weren't being super heroes, we'd get the biggest umbrella we could find and see if we could hop off the table and think like we were flying. Of course, imagination had a lot to do with the notion that we were slowing down our three foot jump from the table.

Of course, the picnic table was the storage place for the sizeable container bursting of water balloons and additional water toys where we kept the supply of wet provisions to throw at the girls when they came into the backyard.

At night, the wood kids picnic table served as the roof of the fort where we could cross the threshold of with our flashlights and envision the terrors of the night that were just ouddoors. Dad had an old canvas tarpaulin that he threw over the top to make it a great tent for our sleep outs. We could shine our flashlights on the exterior to see who's flashlight beam was the brightest and may make the longest beam. Our dog completely loved it as well and it appeared she always had a way of generating chaos and laughter every time she worked her way in.

When Mom came out with a tray full of lemonade and goodies and set them on table we, of course, were speedily seated and all set to enjoy the cool food and drink. That was sometimes a pre-payment for our pre-dinnertime chores, which often included husking the corn on the cob.

Most times, we ate dinner inside but repeatedly ended up the meal in the backyard consuming watermelon or some other sloppy summertime dessert.

Come winter time, we woudl prop the table up on it's side and use it as a barrier to disappear behind through snowball fights or a place to put the hot chocolate.

Now, it's time for you to step into your thoughts machine and go way back to your childhood. Close your eyes and see the little boy or girl running or giggling and experiencing so much fun with something as plain as a plain wooden kids picnic table! I don't know about you but for me, it really is a lot of pleasure to look back and experience again the fun times and laughter.

With all the day to day stresses, cell phones and being linked with the world every second of the day or night, it's comforting and de-stressing to go back to the extraordinary days of your childhood.
